Women in Research Webinar #41: Building your social capital
Research careers are shaped by more than the work you produce. The people around you can also play an important role in opening up opportunities, providing advice and support, introducing you to new collaborators and helping your work become more visible.
But building these relationships does not always come naturally. It can be difficult to know who you should connect with, how to approach people outside your immediate circle, or how to build genuine professional relationships without feeling like you are simply “networking”.
So who do you need around you to build a successful research career, and how can you develop those relationships in a way that works for you?
In this webinar, ARC Laureate Fellow and lead of the Women in Research initiative, Professor Sharon Parker (Curtin University), will explore how researchers can build and make the most of their social capital throughout their careers.
She will be joined by ARC Laureate Fellows, Professor Jen Smith-Merry (University of Sydney) and Professor Ann McGrath AM (Australian National University), who will reflect on the relationships that have shaped their own careers, how their networks have changed over time and what they have learned about building meaningful professional connections.
The discussion will explore the different roles that mentors, sponsors, collaborators, peers and wider professional networks can play, as well as practical ways to build relationships within and beyond your institution.
